Water Conservation in Carpet & Rug Manufacturing

One of the processes which is rarely discussed when we are talking about measuring carbon footprint and energy usage is water. Conserving water saves energy. Energy is needed to filter, heat and pump water the water to the factories and manufacturing plants, so reducing your water usage also reduces your carbon footprint.

We want to share with you some of the ways we are helping to reuse this water. This can have a huge impact on the local land in India that goes through seasons of drought. With the ability to recycle our wastewater, Obeetee and Totzke Ltd conserves millions of gallons of water per year.

‘Through water conservation initiatives, we have reduced consumption by 90%’

Typically, washing a carpet uses 30 buckets per square yard. To aid our conservation efforts, we wash our tufted rug collections with a low concentration of detergent and less water.

We treat all residual water using our onsite effluent treatment* and wastewater recycling facility. We then use this clean water for irrigating the fields around the factory.

Channelling - Water used to dye and wash carpets is directed to the water effluent treatment plant through planned drainage systems.

Primary Treatment

Water is treated with alum and lime to clean the effluents.

Secondary Treatment

The water is then treated with live bacteria that are cultivated in-house to clear the water of any organic waste.

Tertiary Treatment

After going through the biological treatment, the water is filtered through the sand and carbon filters. The water is then released outside and is fit for irrigation.

When we discuss environmental impacts and energy usage often water is not considered. We are actively helping to keep our ecosystems running for our wildlife, local people and homes.
