Understanding Rug Constructions- Hand Tufting

Handtufting Technique

Handtufting is a process for constructing a rug and is the most popular technique in our collection. We use this because bespoke designs are possible, small quantities are possible, any colour is possible. We would like to educate you on what it is and the various ways you can make your rug interesting.

The process begins when a canvas has been stretched perfectly over an upright loom frame.  This will keep the rug safe and supported while it is being constructed.  Handtufted can be either 100% wool or a wool/viscose blend.

Upright loom allows us to construct the rug with the rug stretched across the loom or canvas

Our weaver then threads the yarn manually, one by one, working with a gun on the back of the canvas. The weaver is following the intended design with the correct colours, following the drawing and the intended tuft heights, should they differ throughout the design.

They would then use the tufting gun to inject or punch yarn into it.  In traditional handknotting this is done fully by hand. That is the reason those rugs can take months to manufacture. The aid of a hand tufting machine reduces the lead time as we have the gun to assist with the process.  This is highly skilled and takes a weaver with great attention to detail. They aim for it to be 100% perfectly matched to the intended design.

There are different finishes of the hand tufted construction techniques, this could be;

Cut Pile - provides a soft upright finish, a formal, traditional and smooth look

Cut & Loop Combination - provides texture because the cut and loop sections will reflect the light differently and the loop pile is good in areas with higher traffic.

Carving - introduces different pile heights cut to increase 3D appearance. The weaver ‘carves’ definition into the rug. This is a slight upcharge but can really elevate the overall effect of the rug

You can also add some interest to your rug by introducing a Ydyed yarn - Each yarn contains different shades which increase the depth of colour. We will be able to consult and guide you to help make your rug perfect for your space.

When all the yarn or other material has been injected into the pattern, another piece, called a scrim, is placed on the rug with latex glue to keep the fibers intact.

It is perfectly finished and quality checked throughout the entire process for each rug. We are then certain they are finished as intended and the quality of craftsmanship is of a high standard.
